Principal’s Report

This will be the last newsletter of the 2019 school year.

Mobile Phone Ban

The Department have placed a State-wide ban on phones in schools that Deloraine High will bring into effect from Term 1 2020. The “off and away all day” policy includes the following key information:

  • Schools must implement the restrictions on the use of mobile phones by all students from the time they arrive at school until the end of the school day
  • All communication with students through the school day must be through the school office
  • Schools must require students with smart watches to set them to aeroplane mode

Further information and the methods for the secure storage of phones will be communicated to students and parents/carers on book sales day.

Presentation Evening

The Presentation Evening was held on Wednesday 11th December. Many successes were celebrated including subject, sports, service, attendance and academic awards and we also enjoyed musical performances by our students. Special acknowledgement to Freya who was awarded our Dux of School Award. Congratulations to all award recipients and thank you to the large number of parents/carers who attended. A list of award recipients can be found further in the newsletter.

Grade 10 Celebration Dinner

I am looking forward to celebrating our Grade 10 students’ achievements with them this week. I wish them well as they continue their learning journey with students transitioning to colleges in Launceston and Devonport and some will move into Year 11 at Deloraine High.

Deloraine Rodeo

I would like to thank students for helping to organise and run a fundraising stall at the recent Deloraine Rodeo. The new school smoker was wheeled out and students served beef brisket and coleslaw in a bun as well as waffles and ice-cream with a berry topping. The money raised will support students heading to Vietnam as part of the World Challenge adventure in 2020. Special thanks to the following parents for their help on the day: Jacinta Townsend, Katherine Kettle and Justine Hartam.

Farewell to Staff

I would like to acknowledge and thank the following staff who are leaving us this year; Michael Monticchio, Daniel Ritchie, David McCormack, Jo Kohler and Carmen Slore.

Thank you for your partnership throughout 2019. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to working with you in 2020.

In partnership.

Deloraine High School Grade 10 Celebration Dinner

The Deloraine High School Grade 10 Celebration Dinner will be held on this evening at the Deloraine Community Complex.

Parents and friends are invited to join the Grade 10 students on this day for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles in the Mezzanine Area of the Community Complex from 5.30pm – 6.30pm. You are also invited to view the decorations in the Auditorium before the commencement of the Grade 10 Celebration Dinner.

Classes and Options 2020

As the end of the year draws closer, we are working on sorting through students’ option forms and allocating classes for next year. There may be one or two changes to the options that will be available, based on students’ final choices, and some students may be asked to rethink their choices as a result. All students have had grade meetings and been informed of our option form process which has now moved to a digital format and all information has been posted on social media. For students unable to complete these forms online paper copies have been made available. If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s option allocations for 2020 please call Stephen Blizzard (Assistant Principal) during school hours.

Core classes are also currently being determined for 2020. Due to the Packages of Learning Agriculture and Advances Manufacturing, Grade 9 and 10 classes will be fully redistributed with changes also occurring from Grades 7 to 8. If you have any concerns, requests or questions about your child’s Core class for 2020, please contact either Dan Ritchie (AST Grades 7/8), Aaron Gilligan (AST Grades 9/10) or Stephen Blizzard to discuss.

Music

It’s been a huge term for the musicians of Delrock High School. Students have worked super hard throughout the term, rehearsing and composing songs to meet performance commitments.

Performances included celebrating the conclusion of ‘Collective Ed’. This included a BBQ at the front of the school, with many students past and present and special guests. A big shout out to all the students involved. I would particularly like to thank Haylie, Zoe, Karlie, Kiana, Joel and Amalie. These students worked really hard to prepare for the day. Congratulations Ruby and Hannah for their magnificent performance in the formal proceedings of Collective Ed. Their performance of their original song captivated the room.

On 29th November, we held a ‘Like a Version’ concert on the Library lawn. The SEC put on a spread and the Delrock Music Department again went to work. They all smashed it with their renditions of a cover tune each and some also performed an original song. A huge thank you to Tristan (Twang) for his contribution on the day and throughout the year. The students were very lucky to have him around to mentor.

Thank you to Hailie for a beautiful performance on the Keyboard on presentation night. Thank you to Becky and Charlotte for a wonderful version of ‘Free Falling’ by Tom Petty. Thank you Jessie, Chelsea, Chloe and Ruby for their amazing cover of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Presentation Night would not have been the same without these outstanding contributions.

Finally the Primary Concert. Wow! I was super impressed on how this concert shaped up. The primary school should be so proud of their music program. So much talent over there. Stuart and Anne Harvey, appreciate your hard work. To the students of Delrock music - simply awesome! It’s been an magnificent year and you all finished it off on a huge high. Merry Xmas and a safe holiday to all.
